郡县，戍卒的工作种类繁多并且较为繁重。由于生活环境的变化，其染病乃至死
亡的状况较为严重。究其原因，首先是西北自然环境的恶劣；其次是戍卒饮食结
构的变化，造成必需的蛋白质与氨基酸等营养元素的缺失，引起身体免疫系统抵
抗力的下降；再其次，戍卒医疗卫生保障制度不甚有效，也在一定程度上影响到 了戍卒的健康；最后，戍卒的贫困和将吏对戍卒的残暴、贪婪也是影响戍卒健康
的原因之一，以上这些因素是共同造成汉时西北戍卒多患“伤寒"、“腹胀"等疾
病的病因。
