Bosnia and Herzegovina gained sovereignty on October 1991, and it soon gained independence from erstwhile Yugoslavia on the 3rd of March 1992.
Sarajevo, nestled in a valley stretching in an east-west direction along the banks of the Miljacka River, has a population of 400 thousand. Capital of Bosnia-Hercegovina, Sarajevo is the meeting place of diverse cultures.
Although the city’s silhouette is dominated by the outlines of Moslem mosques and minarets, Catholic and Orthodox churches, not to mention Jewish synagogues, can also be seen.
Located on the bank of the Neretva River , Mostar is the administrative center of Herzegovina canton and the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Sutjeska is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest national parks. The national park itself is 17,500 hectares of magnificent and untouched wilderness. Sutjeska National Park hosts one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe, called Perucica. The drive to Sutjeska National Park will take us a little less than 2 hours. The park is a true gem in terms of the wildlife and large number of endemic plants. The park also includes Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest and impressive mountain, Maglic, named after the thick fog that often surround its rocky peak. We will leave our car behind at a viewpoint Dragos Sedlo with colorful view of the one of two remaining mediaeval forests in Europe – Perucica. Jumping out from eternity, we are graced by a lonely waterfall “Skakavac” plunging itself 75 meters down into the dark spruce and beech forest of Perucica.
Day 1: A a scenic two hour drive from Sarajevo towards the Montenegrin border to the southeast we arrive at the panoramic view of the rare, lush, virgin woodlands of Perucica Forest and ‘Grasshopper’ waterfall (85m.). The surrounding snow-capped mountains of Volujak tower around us as we head towards Prijevor Pass at 1,600m. From there the highest point in Bosnia, Maglic Mountain, jolts out from the east and greets us with jagged rock faces that peak at 2,386 meters. A comfortable 2.5 hour hike leads us to Trnovacko Lake where we will set camp before taking a dip. The surrounding valleys are great for wandering into the evening hours as you prepare for the ascent Bosnia’s highest peak in the morning.
